According to Jada Pinkett Smith, she and Will Smith have been living separately since 2016

Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith attended the 27th annual Critics-Choice Awards in Los Angeles on March 13, 2022. According to Pinkett Smith, she and her husband, Will, have led separate lives since 2016, a revelation she made in an interview with Hoda Kotb. This marks a new level of disclosure for the prominent Hollywood couple who married in 1997 and have previously acknowledged marital troubles, but not in such explicit terms.

Jada Pinkett Smith & her husband, Will Smith, have been leading separate lives since 2016, as revealed by Jada in an interview with Hoda Kotb. This iconic Hollywood couple, who tied the knot in 1997, has openly discussed their challenges and separations before but had never gone into this level of detail.

While it’s not a formal divorce, Pinkett Smith described to Kotb, in a clip released on “Today,” that it’s essentially a divorce in everything but name. Smith and Pinkett Smith have three children together, Willow and Jaden, and Smith’s son, Trey, from his previous marriage.

Representatives for both Smith and Pinkett-Smith have not responded to requests for comments as of yet.

The news came as a surprise to many, given Pinkett Smith’s previous candid discussions in her “Red Table Talk” series, where she and Smith addressed her extramarital relationship in a 2020 episode and the infamous incident at the 2022 Academy Awards. During the ceremony, Smith unexpectedly walked on stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s hair.

The complete interview will be broadcast as part of an hour-long NBC News prime-time special on October 13 at 8 p.m. ET. Furthermore, Pinkett Smith’s memoir, “Worthy,” is set to release on October 17, promising further insights into their lives and relationship, as well as her upbringing in Baltimore.

Pinkett Smith explained to Kotb, “By 2016, we were both drained from trying. We were stuck in our fantasies of who we thought the other person should be.”

She also mentioned that despite considering divorce, she hasn’t been able to follow through with it.

“I made a commitment that there should never be a reason for us to get divorced. We will work through whatever,” she stated.
In a recent discussion with People Magazine, Pinkett Smith noted that she initially thought the slap was part of a skit.

“I thought, ‘There’s no way Will actually hit him,'” Pinkett Smith said. “It wasn’t until Will started to return to his seat that I realized it wasn’t a skit.”

Smith has since apologized multiple times for the incident, which resulted in a 10-year ban on him attending the Oscars or any other academy event.
