In GitHub’s latest Octoverse report, India takes the lead in developer numbers, accompanied by the release of several new AI tools by the company.
India’s developer scene is booming, and GitHub’s recent Octoverse report sheds light on the surge. The platform, hosting its GitHub Universe 2023 global developer conference, revealed that India added a whopping 3.5 million developers in 2023 alone, bringing the total to 13.2 million.
With this remarkable growth, GitHub predicts that India will surpass the US in total developer population by 2027, making it the world’s largest developer hub.
Sharryn Napier, VP of APAC at GitHub, emphasized the crucial role of India’s growing developer community in shaping the country’s position as an innovation powerhouse. Notably, Indian developers are making significant contributions to generative AI projects on GitHub, showcasing the country’s rising importance in the global AI landscape.
GitHub aims to further boost India’s impact by empowering its 13.2 million developers with AI tools to accelerate innovation, productivity, and overall progress. The State of the Octoverse report also highlighted the consistent growth of India’s developer community, noting a 36% increase in 2023.
The report acknowledged the UN-backed Digital Public Goods Alliance and India’s efforts in building a digital public infrastructure with open materials, contributing to the robust growth of the developer community.
GitHub also unveiled new AI-powered features, including the general availability of GitHub Copilot Chat, which integrates natural language programming and assists developers with error detection, unit test writing, and debugging. Powered by GPT-4, Copilot Chat offers enhanced code suggestions and facilitates discussions within the code flow. GitHub Copilot Chat is expanding to JetBrains IDEs and will be available in December 2023.
Additionally, GitHub introduced GitHub Copilot Enterprise, tailored for integration within a company’s codebase to enhance developer productivity with personalized code suggestions and task automation. Priced at $39 per user per month, it guarantees enterprise-level security and will be available from February 2024.
